So, which photos won awards?

November 22nd, 2010

The night before entries for this year’s SAPPAs (South Australian Professional Photography Awards) closed I decided that I would enter. I’m so glad I did as I ended up with three Silver Awards and one Silver Distinction! Here are my shots that were awarded and a little information to go with each one:

I wasn’t officially working at Gerard McCabe Presents Noir this year, but did take my camera and get a few shots from my seat, I really enjoyed the lighting from where I was, right at the start of the runway, the bright lights that normally light the models at the other end were a fabulous hair-light to me [Documentary* category, silver award].

Editorial for the Sunday Mail, they didn’t run this shot as it’s quite dark but I have always loved the lights shining through the rain, silhouetting the SES volunteers working late into the night to help bring the Adelaide Hills back to order after chaotic storm damage, it was one very long night shift, so I’m glad that it got an award [Documentary* category : silver award].

L : An out-take of the gorgeous Amy Fromm, the face of the 2010 Adelaide Fashion Festival at the promo shoot, she’s award-winning in her own right [Commercial category, silver award]; R : Editorial for the Sunday Mail, this poor lady’s house caught on fire for the second time recently. Again, the Sunday Mail didn’t run this photo, but did run one of the dog who woke up the sleeping occupants when the fire broke out [Portrait category, silver with distinction].

*this year the rules for documentary were simple, you must have literally observed the scene and played no part in creating it, you also couldn’t add or remove elements apart from cropping (I had removed some of the flare when I submitted the SES shot to the paper, but had to revert back to the original for the awards. I would have added the rays of light to the far right stage light in the runway shot too, had I been allowed).
