A bit sentimental on Father's DaySeptember 6th, 2009If I am to leave the house on a cold-ish Sunday, when I don’t have a voice, there has to be a good reason. While Father’s Day is a pretty good reason, everyone knew that I was sick so I was sure that I could forego the visit to my parents’ house and give my dad his present and a hug some other time. Then I thought about it a bit more, I am very lucky to still have my dad around, most people who hear a certain ”c” word from their doctor don’t get off as easy as he did last year. So, I packed up my camera bag, jumped in the car and when I got there I asked dad to sit in his beloved garage so I could do a quick 5 minute portrait of him. I think my dad is one of those people who gets more photogenic the more birthdays he has, sorry dad! I hope that everyone who has a loved one touched by illness has at least one special photo of that person to warm their heart. Happy Father’s Day Dad (& thanks mum for being a great assistant)! xx

Prints vs CDSeptember 2nd, 2009There are a lot of photographers out there who offer a “shoot & burn” service, this has caused a lot of discussion amongst the industry and while I’m not going to go into it too much I do want to offer my opinion, after all this is my blog and I should be entitled to voice my opinion here if nowhere else, right? I’ll start by saying if you want it, I’ll do it, but I don’t like doing it and here’s why: 99% of the time a client is going to go to the cheapest place they can find to get prints done. I get all of my prints done at Atkins, they are my pro lab of choice, so I have my computer and therefore files colour managed to suit their printers. I cannot guarantee what your prints will look like if you go somewhere else. The CD of files from me will be colour corrected and ready for print (at Atkins), though they are not fully retouched - I wouldn’t have time to shoot if I was artworking every single file. If there are 300 files from a wedding (after getting rid of all the eyes shut, pulling faces, bad angles, lighting tests etc), for basic retouching on every one of those files that’s a minimum of 75 hours sitting in front of my computer. How many of those 300 files are actually going to get printed (especially when all of my clients get proof prints included)? On the other hand, purchase prints from me and you’ll get a much much better result. For example, the image below is quite lovely, it could be printed as is:
OR after about 2 hours work, I would much rather you have photos hanging on the wall looking like this:
E & A choose to have this photo from their wedding on Stradbroke Island as a 20x30inch print, I was so happy when I got the order as it was my favourite too, I’d been wanting to get at it for ages and some photos just get better the bigger you print them! By the way, you can’t take a photo at it’s shooting res and print it that big, you have to be very careful about how you increase the size in order to retain the quality, another advantage of ordering prints through your chosen photographer! |
